Harry Potter, The Deathly Hallows Part 1 Trailer

The first thing that appears on the screen is The Warner Bros. Studios logo, but, not in their traditional colours: it is in a greyscale effect which creates the feeling that Harry Potter has almost made it more popular and that it doesn’t need to be in the traditional colours for the audience to recognise it. It also creates the dark, mysterious feeling right from the start of the trailer.

We are able to hear a dingy, drab sound/music which is non-diegetic and it is continuous throughout the whole trailer.

There is then a voice over of a man that as a husky sort of voice, this creates the impression that he is one of the main characters also it makes us aware that he is a popular character as we don’t have to see his face for us to recognise who it is.

The dull picturing of a landscape shot, which is the camera lens wide angle, lets the audience know where possible settings are, there is then a dim, cloudy long shot and you are able to see there are two figures in the distance but it is not clear who they are or their faces. There is a twin medium shot of who it is and of them both having a conversation, it then changes to close up shot, back to medium close up, long shot, medium close up and then it changes to quick speedy shots and scenes from the film its self.

There are short sentences spoken by characters which let the audience know that they will be the well known quotes of the film.

Date releases are shown from both part 1 and part 2. By also letting the audience know when part 2 will be release will promote part 2 even before its own trailer has come out.

Editing such as jump cuts are used to keep the audience ‘on the edge of their seats’ whilst watching the section of the intense fighting scenes.

By repeating “Harry Potter” it makes the audience question what will happen to him in this film without even realising it.

We are given the name of the film at the end of the trailer and the music changes to the theme tune of the first film so that the audience recognise it more as the Harry Potter films.

In this particular trailer of the film we are shown plenty of the CGI technology used, this shows the audience how much the films have improved over the years.

Camera movement is also used such as the speeded up shots throughout the trailer, they increase towards the end to show that the countdown for the film is nearing.

The fantasy film genre has seemed to become more popular over time because of technology improving drastically. Some people may not even realise they are watching fantasy films as the target audience is usually stereotyped as ‘geeks’ or people who fantasise over fictional characters. I would personally say that fantasy is not my favourite genre of films but I do enjoy specific films that fall in that category.

Warner Bros. Film Studio Tour Evaluation

On Monday 7th October the sixth form media classes went to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour of Harry Potter in Watford. We went there to be introduced in to movie marketing and to learn a lot about the making of movies, special effects, technology and the whole process of preparation before even beginning to attempt shooting films.
Before we started the studio tour we had a brief speech from a member of staff and she told us a little bit about the movie poster releases in different countries and how iconic Harry Potter has become all over the world. We then went in to a cinema screen and there was a presentation given on the things the cast and crew of Harry Potter did before the movie premiers and release dates to ensure that everyone was talking about it. After that we began the tour, where we could experience the great hall and look at all the props, costumes, settings and everything that was included in the whole collection of films. We all had a lesson given by a member of staff working at the studios, the year 12 lesson was on movie marketing.
The lesson started off with a short introduction of the Harry Potter films, and we had to order the film posters using the progress of the editing, shot types, body language and lighting to help us. We also had to guess what film tag lines were from and learnt that they are important in creating success for the film and for it to be as well known as it can be. Another thing we did was describe what we thought a film would be like just from the movie poster and see if it was clear or not. The man talked us through a few things about film making and all the behind the scenes people, he used as an example a rock, that there was one person to design the rock, another to make it, a person to paint it, someone else to take the rock to where it needed to go and one person to put it back if it was moved. I found that quite surprising because everyone forgets about the people who bring the whole film together.
Ten highlights from the Harty Potter studio tour was seeing the cupboard under the stairs as that's where we first got an experience of what Harry's life was like living with the Dursleys. Being sat in the cinema watching a documentary given by Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint then seeing the cinema screen go up and behind it were the doors to the great hall. The gates to Hogwarts were a massive surprise and it gave me an insight in to how big they actually were and put it into perspective. I also enjoyed seeing different rooms such as the common room, the boys dormitory  and Dumbledores office. The wands that were used for the films I found fascinating because it is completely different to seeing them in the films. The costumes were interesting to see and it was interesting to learn different things about the individual characters such as Hagrid that the actor was a 6"10 rugby player that wore a body suit and heels in his boots to become a half giant. Also that Snape's costume wasn't black but a very dark blue for it to show up much darker on camera. Walking down Diagon Alley was quite weird because it looks very different on the films compared to in the sound stage. Finally I enjoyed the lesson givipen by the man because he was hyper and interesting to listen to and I didn't get bored or lose focus.
To conclude I feel that I have learned a lot from the trip to the Warner Bros. Studios and it was a good way to learn about films and marketing because it was different to a normal lesson in school. It was fascinating and interesting to see everything there and I feel I have gained many new things that will contribute to the course as I can now appreciate all the hard work that has gone in to the films and how hard I will need to work to get my media a level.
